A probationer accused of stealing a car and possessing burglary tools was charged Wednesday with auto theft, among other offenses.
Raul Hernandez Peres, 25, was arrested Saturday when he was stopped by Riverside County sheriff’s deputies patrolling near Highway 74.
Along with the auto theft count, Peres is charged with receiving stolen property, burglary, possession of burglary tools and driving on a suspended license.
He made his initial court appearance Wednesday before Superior Court Judge David Gunn, who appointed him a public defender and scheduled his arraignment for Thursday morning at the Riverside Hall of Justice.
Peres is being held without bail at the Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta.
According to sheriff’s Sgt. Veronica Amparano, about 4 a.m. Saturday, deputies patrolling Sophie Street where it meets state Route 74 in Good Hope spotted the driver of a 1999 Honda Civic committing unspecified traffic violations and stopped the vehicle. After discovering the motorist, Peres, was on probation, they investigated further and located alleged burglary implements in the car.
When deputies determined the Honda was confirmed stolen out of Murrieta, they took Peres into custody without incident.
According to court records, Peres has prior convictions for driving under the influence, evading arrest and receiving a stolen vehicle.
