A fifth-grader charged with attempted murder Monday denied stabbing a classmate at their Boyle Heights elementary school.
The 11-year-old boy appeared in Eastlake Juvenile Court for arraignment on the attempted murder charge, along with a felony count of bringing or possessing a weapon on school grounds.
The judge ordered the boy, whose name was withheld because of his age, to remain in juvenile hall for now and to return to court on April 18.
The boy’s grandmother, uncle and stepmother were in the courtroom Monday morning as the judge advised the 11-year-old to follow the rules and do his lawyer a favor by staying out of trouble, NBC4 reported.
The stabbing that left the 12-year-old victim hospitalized occurred Thursday at Bridge Street Elementary School.
Authorities have not commented on what precipitated the attack, in which the youngster was stabbed in the back with a pocket knife during recess. But one of the suspect’s relatives claimed he was being bullied by the older boy.
