Felony charges were filed Wednesday against a documented gang member accused of pulling a handgun on a Hemet man and threatening him with it.
Jontai McNair Jr., 21, of Moreno Valley was arrested Friday following an investigation by the Riverside County Gang Task Force.
He is facing a firearm assault count, along with charges of brandishing a firearm for the purpose of intimidation, street gang activity, being a felon in possession of a gun and being a felon in possession of ammunition.
He’s being held in lieu of $125,000 bail at the Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta and is slated to be arraigned Thursday at the Banning Justice Center.
According to Hemet police Sgt. Bob Nishida, the defendant allegedly confronted the victim, whose identity was not disclosed, outside a strip mall in the 1600 block of West Florida Avenue, near Lyon Avenue, on the afternoon of March 22.
McNair pulled a pistol during the encounter, which was gang-related, the sergeant alleged.
It was unclear whether the probationer attempted to fire the gun.
The victim got away unscathed, and gang task force investigators learned of the attack four days later and identified the defendant as the alleged gunman, according to Nishida.
Investigators tracked McNair down on Finley Avenue in Moreno Valley, where he was taken into custody without incident.
According to court records, he has prior convictions for receiving a stolen vehicle, gang activity and illegal possession of a firearm.
