An attempted murder charge was filed Thursday against a 20-year-old probationer accused of shooting a man in Banning.
Mathew Clay Fisher allegedly shot a man with a 9mm handgun in the 1400 block of North Eighth Street on April 5 before fleeing the scene. He was arrested Tuesday in Desert Hot Springs, although it remains unclear how police connected him to the crime.
Fisher is also charged with assault with a semi-automatic firearm and gun-related sentence-enhancements. He’s being held at the Smith Correctional Facility in Banning on $1 million bail, and is scheduled to be arraigned on Friday at the Banning Justice Center.
According the Banning Police Department, officers responded about 1 p.m. on a shots-fired call and found a man suffering from a single gunshot wound.
The victim, who was only identified as “Jeremy V.” in a felony criminal complaint filed by the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office on Thursday, was taken to a local hospital and survived, although the extent of his injuries was not released.
Witnesses reported seeing a man dressed in black carrying a handgun and running away from the scene of the shooting, according to police.
On Tuesday, Banning police and members of the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office Gang Impact Team arrested Fisher on Fifth Street in Desert Hot Springs, although it remains unclear if that was his permanent residence.
Police did not reveal how Fisher was named a suspect in the crime.
Fisher has no documented felony convictions in Riverside County, although he was convicted of a misdemeanor for possessing brass knuckles last month, for which he received three years probation.
