Anaheim Caretaker Charged with Raping Disabled Patient

An Anaheim caretaker was charged Wednesday with raping a severely disabled longtime patient in an assisted living facility and videotaping the sexual assault.

Raul Salgadocastro, 40, was taken into custody on his way to work Monday and booked on suspicion of raping the 45-year-old woman, for whom he had been a caregiver for nearly 20 years, said Anaheim police Sgt. Shane Carringer.

The victim is “non-communicative,” and the sexual assault is alleged to have happened in a live-in care facility in Anaheim on Oct. 7, Carringer said.

According to court papers, the victim is “autistic, mentally retarded and is epileptic” and has the “mental capacity of a 3- to 4-year-old.”

The defendant, who is charged with a felony count of rape of an incompetent person, is accused in court papers of videotaping himself assaulting the victim.

Police recovered a cell phone allegedly belonging to Salgadocastro that contained video footage of the attack, according to Carringer.

Salgadocastro “indicated he has an alcohol and drug problem,” when questioned by investigators, according to court papers, which further allege the defendant “stated he has gone to work to take care of individuals while under the influence of alcohol and drugs.”

Salgadocastro is being held on $1 million bail pending arraignment, which was rescheduled to Nov. 10.
