A 37-year-old convicted rapist was charged Monday with raping a woman in Santa Ana.
Mustafa Tarin, who was convicted of raping an underage girl in May 2007, is now facing one count each of forcible rape, attempted forcible rape, forcible rape in concert with another person, sexual battery and false imprisonment.
His arraignment was rescheduled for Jan. 8 in the courtroom at the Central Jail in Santa Ana.
According to Santa Ana police, the victim met a man known only to her as Adam through a friend on Instagram, and he offered her a management job in a marijuana dispensary and invited her to his apartment, where she was introduced to Tarin.
Police and prosecutors allege the two sexually assaulted the woman in Adam’s apartment and then attempted to do it again in Tarin’s apartment in the same complex. The victim was able to identify Tarin and not her other alleged attacker, police said.
Tarin was sentenced on March 7, 2008, to 12 years in prison for a Christmas Day rape in 2000, according to court records. Tarin was 17 when he and another assailant raped the 14-year-old victim, but he was charged as an adult.
The rape of the teen went unsolved for more than five years until investigators were able to link Tarin to the attack through a DNA match, which was made after the passsage of Proposition 69, which allowed access to DNA samples from convicted felons.
The teenage victim was lured into a car with Tarin, where she was given a “funny”-tasting drink before she was taken to Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley, where her attackers took turns sexually assaulting her, prosecutors said.
