Three men accused of pummeling a Perris resident with brass knuckles, then fleeing to a house where one of the defendants barricaded himself inside until deputies convinced him to surrender, were charged Thursday with assault resulting in great bodily injury and other offenses.
Santiago Fregoso, 18, and brothers Rony Alastaiy Sagastume, 23, and Rony Jose Sagastume, 21 — all of Perris — were arrested Monday night following a Riverside County Sheriff’s Department investigation.
Along with the assault resulting in injuries count, Rony A. Sagastume is charged with making criminal threats, assault using a weapon other than a firearm and vandalism. His younger brother is additionally charged with committing a felony while on bail.
Fregoso received only the assault charge on the criminal complaint filed against the trio.
All were slated to make an initial court appearance Thursday afternoon at the Riverside Hall of Justice.
They were jailed at the Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta. Rony A. Sagastume was being held in lieu of $1 million bail, while his brother was being held on $500,000 bail, and Fregoso was being held on $25,000 bail.
According to sheriff’s Sgt. Dennis Santiago, between 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Monday, the trio allegedly attacked a man, whose identity was not disclosed, in the 1200 block of Mt. Baldy Street, near Mt. Rainer Street.
Santiago alleged one or more of the defendants used brass knuckles during the assault, striking the victim multiple times in the head, inflicting lacerations.
Patrol deputies were alerted to the alleged attack and went to investigate, confirming the identities of the parties involved, according to Santiago.
A possible motive for the alleged beating was not provided.
Santiago said deputies went to the house where the Sagastume brothers and Fregoso were known to be staying.
The sergeant alleged that Rony J. Sagastume attempted to flee the property when deputies arrived, but he was quickly apprehended.
Fregoso was taken into custody without incident, but Rony A. Sagastume “barricaded himself inside the residence,” refusing deputies’ orders to come out, Santiago said.
He said a search warrant was obtained and formally served on the defendant, who then emerged from the house and was taken into custody without further incident.
No one was injured.
The victim underwent medical treatment and is recovering.
Court records show that Fregoso has prior convictions in juvenile court, as does Rony J. Sagastume, but the offenses were not listed. Rony J. Sagastume also has a separate unresolved assault case pending at the Riverside courthouse.
Rony A. Sagastume has no documented prior adult convictions in Riverside County.
