A probationer accused of shooting a man during an attack near a Perris park was charged Monday with attempted murder and other offenses.
John Paul Hernandez, 37, of Perris was arrested Thursday along with 18-year-old Chayanne Guzman, also of Perris, following a Riverside County Sheriff’s Department investigation into the shooting last month.
In addition to attempted murder, Hernandez is charged with firearm assault and sentence-enhancing gun and great bodily injury allegations.
No charges have been filed yet against Guzman.
Hernandez, who is being held in lieu of $1 million bail at the Byrd Detention Center, was slated to make his initial court appearance Monday afternoon at the Riverside Hall of Justice.
Guzman is being held on the same amount, also at the Murrieta jail, where he was booked on suspicion of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon.
According to sheriff’s Sgt. Dave Tinker, the alleged attack occurred at 10:30 p.m. on March 20 in the 500 block of North Perris Boulevard, near Foss Field Park.
Tinker said a man, whose identity was not released, was shot once, suffering a non-life-threatening wound from which he is recovering.
A possible motive was not disclosed.
The assailants fled after the attack, and detectives spent the ensuing two weeks working to identify them, ultimately determining that both Hernandez and Guzman were involved, Tinker alleged.
Warrants were served on the men Thursday afternoon. Hernandez was taken into custody without incident in the area of B and Second streets in Perris, and Guzman was arrested uneventfully in the area of Highway 74 and Ellis Avenue in Good Hope.
Court records show that Hernandez has prior convictions for felony driving under the influence, resisting arrest, shoplifting and driving on a suspended license.
No information was available concerning Guzman, and it was unclear why no charges were filed against him. As of Monday afternoon, he remained in custody.
