A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 4 for a Los Angeles man charged with driving a stolen vehicle and leading police on a high-speed pursuit that stretched over five area freeways and ended with a crash.
Loren Lee Nava, 36, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to one felony count each of fleeing a pursuing peace officer’s motor vehicle while driving recklessly and driving a vehicle without consent, along with one misdemeanor count of hit-and-run driving resulting in property damage.
Los Angeles police officers spotted the stolen Honda Civic Saturday, according to prosecutors.
Nava allegedly fled from the officers and drove onto the Foothill (210) Freeway, where the California Highway Patrol took over the pursuit, which continued on the Ronald Reagan (118), Golden State (5) and Hollywood (101) freeways, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
Nava allegedly crashed into a vehicle on the Hollywood Freeway, ran from the stolen car and was quickly apprehended by CHP officers, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
The other driver was not seriously injured, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
Nava has remained behind bars since his arrest Saturday, jail records show.
Nava is due back in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom Sept. 4 for a hearing to determine if there is enough evidence to require him to stand trial.
If convicted as charged, Nava could face up to 15 years and 10 months in state prison, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
