A homeless man accused of breaking into a Glen Ivy house and trying to haul out bags full of stolen property was charged Wednesday with felony burglary and vandalism.

Ian Robert Newman, 22, was arrested Monday after a Riverside County sheriff’s K9 unit allegedly found him inside a residence in the 11200 block of Evergreen Loop, near Elmwood Street, in the unincorporated community, which is situated roughly halfway between Corona and Lake Elsinore.

Newman is being held in lieu of $35,000 bail at the Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta and is slated to make his initial court appearance Wednesday afternoon at the Riverside Hall of Justice.

According to sheriff’s Sgt. Jeff Reese, a homeowner returned to the Evergreen Loop location about 3 p.m. Monday and spotted signs that someone had forced their way into the house.

The victim, whose name was not released, called 911, and deputies arrived within a few minutes, Reese said.

A deputy and his service dog entered the two-story house and encountered Newman “packing stolen items into bags,” the sergeant alleged.

The defendant surrendered on command, according to Reese.

There was water damage inside the home allegedly caused by Newman, he said.

The defendant has no documented prior felony convictions in Riverside County.
