A convicted felon accused of shooting a Riverside man and turning combative when patrol officers caught up with him several days later was charged Thursday with attempted murder and other offenses.
Daniel Ramos Calderon, 24, was arrested Monday night following the confrontation with police in the area of Main and Russell streets.
Along with the attempted murder count, Calderon is charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of a loaded gun, resisting arrest and sentence-enhancing gun and great bodily injury allegations.
He made his initial court appearance before Riverside County Superior Court Judge Jacqueline Jackson, who appointed him a public defender and scheduled his arraignment for Feb. 7 at the Riverside Hall of Justice.
The probationer is being held in lieu of $1 million bail at the Smith Correctional Facility in Banning.
According to Riverside police, Calderon allegedly got into a dispute with a man in the 1700 block of Enterprise Drive about 10 p.m. last Friday and opened fire. The victim, whose name was not released, was wounded in the upper body and underwent surgery.
Calderon was quickly identified as the alleged assailant, and officers began searching for his vehicle, which was spotted three nights later at a gas station, police said.
Two patrolmen approached the vehicle and “noticed a handgun between the suspect’s legs,” according to a police statement, which said one of the officers “grabbed the firearm, and the suspect began to struggle with them. A Taser was deployed, which subdued the suspect, who was then taken into custody.”
Neither officer was injured. Calderon suffered minor abrasions during the struggle, but he did not require medical treatment.
According to court records, he has prior convictions for domestic abuse, theft and making criminal threats.
