Police Friday announced the arrest of a suspect charged with murdering a 67-year-old man in an attack at the victim’s Long Beach home.
Members of the United States Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force located and arrested Cleveland Monte Rogers, 46, of Compton on Thursday in the 3300 block of Atlantic Avenue in Signal Hill, the Long Beach Police Department said.
Rogers had been charged by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office in the killing of Lewis Haller Jr., who was attacked on Feb. 5 and died at a hospital on Feb. 11, according to police and the county coroner’s office.
Officers were dispatched about 9 p.m. the night of the attack to the 800 block of Alamitos Avenue when the victim called to report he had been battered by another man, police said.
Haller was found with injuries to his upper body and fire department personnel treated him at the scene.
On Feb. 6, officers responded to a hospital where Haller had taken himself, the LBPD said.
“Officers identified Haller as the victim of the battery incident from the previous night,” according to a police statement. “Due to the severity of the injuries, homicide detectives were called out to initiate an investigation.”
Police were notified Feb. 12 that Haller had died from the injuries he suffered in the attack.
After the case was presented to prosecutors on Feb. 19, Rogers was charged with murder and a warrant was issued for his arrest, police said.
After his apprehension, he was booked on suspicion of murder and “various outstanding warrants,” police said.
Rogers was being held on more than $2 million bail, according to sheriff’s inmate records.
