Attempted murder and other charges were filed Friday against a 50-year-old man accused of stabbing a Calimesa resident during a confrontation at the victim’s property.
Fernando Edward Garcia of Yucaipa was arrested Wednesday after the alleged attack in the 29000 block of San Timoteo Canyon Road, near Redlands Boulevard.
Along with the attempted murder count, Garcia is charged with assault resulting in great bodily injury and child endangerment.
He made his initial court appearance Friday afternoon before Riverside County Superior Court Judge Becky Dugan, who appointed him a public defender and scheduled his arraignment for Monday at the Banning Justice Center.
Garcia is being held in lieu of $1 million bail at the Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta.
According to sheriff’s Sgt. Richard Carroll, Garcia and the victim, identified in court documents only as “I.R.,” were arguing when the defendant allegedly grabbed a knife and stabbed the man about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, then fled the scene as witnesses called 911.
He said deputies reached the location within a few minutes and found the unnamed victim in need of emergency treatment. He. was taken to Riverside University Medical Center in Moreno Valley, where he underwent surgery and is recovering, the sergeant said.
Deputies searched the premises around the victim’s residence and found Garcia, who was taken into custody without a struggle.
The defendant has no documented prior felony convictions in Riverside County.
