A Moreno Valley couple accused of beating two children under their care, inflicting life-threatening injuries on one of the tots, were charged Wednesday with multiple counts of child abuse.

Tanya Marie Conchola, 38, and Eric Sammy Pacheco, 33, were arrested Sunday at their home in the 26500 block of Fir Avenue, near Morrison Street.

Both defendants are charged with five counts of willful child cruelty. Pacheco is additionally charged with a sentence-enhancing great bodily injury allegation. They’re slated to make a joint initial court appearance Wednesday afternoon at the Riverside Hall of Justice.

Conchola is being held in lieu of $175,000 bail at the Robert Presley Jail in Riverside, and Pacheco is being held in lieu of $2 million bail at the Indio Jail.

According to sheriff’s Sgt. Steve Favero, paramedics were called to the defendants’ property about 3 p.m. Sunday to investigate reports of a boy in medical distress.

The victim, whose name and age were not released, had collapsed and was not breathing when first responders arrived, Favero said.

He said the child was revived and taken to nearby Riverside University Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition.

Deputies suspected child abuse, detaining Conchola and Pacheco and searching the house, where they found a girl suffering from unspecified non-life-threatening injuries, Favero said. That unnamed youngster was also hospitalized and is in stable condition, the sergeant said.

According to Favero, other children supervised by the defendants were located and alleged that they, too, had been abused.

Investigators would not disclose whether any of the minors were related to the pair, were foster children or part of a group home.

According to court records, Pacheco has prior misdemeanor convictions for theft and driving under the influence. Conchola has no documented priors in Riverside County.
