
A murder charge was filed Thursday against a 28-year-old Anaheim resident accused in the death of a man who was run over by his work van while trying to stop the vehicle from being stolen.
Omar Sanchez is scheduled to be arraigned in the Central Jail courtroom sometime Thursday.
Charges were also filed against two alleged accomplices. Anaheim residents Yesenia Escareno, 21, and Adriana Gomez, 29, are both charged with a felony count of being an accessory after the fact and Escareno additionally faces a carjacking charge.
Jose DeJesus Berrelleza, 33, was killed about 6:20 a.m. Tuesday on Melinda Circle at Elsiena Way, Anaheim police Sgt. Shane Carringer said.
“It is believed Berrelleza, the father of an 8-year-old daughter, attempted to stop the theft of the vehicle to prevent the loss of his livelihood,” he said, noting that the victim worked in construction and the van contained all of his tools.
About two hours later, Anaheim police found the stolen vehicle a mile and a half away from the crime scene and detained the three defendants, Carringer said.
