A probationer accused of fatally knifing his 24-year-old half-brother and seriously injuring two other men during a confrontation outside a Corona home was charged Thursday with murder and other offenses.
Brandon Joseph Barber, 29, was arrested Monday after the alleged attack that claimed the life of Jesse Maturino.
Along with the murder count, Barber is charged with aggravated mayhem, assault with a deadly weapon resulting in great bodily injury and a sentence-enhancing allegation of using a deadly weapon in the commission of a felony.
The defendant — being held on $2 million bail at the Robert Presley Jail in Riverside — is slated to make his initial court appearance Thursday afternoon at the Riverside courthouse.
According to Corona police Sgt. Chad Fountain, about 5 p.m. Monday, Barber became enraged with Maturino for undisclosed reasons as the two men stood outside the victim’s residence in the 1300 block of Turquoise Drive, near Zircon Street.
Fountain alleged that the defendant pulled a knife and plunged it into Maturino, who collapsed in the middle of the street.
Two other men who may have tried to intervene — 47-year-old Miguel Maturino and 23-year-old Alex Necoeche — also were allegedly stabbed by Barber, according to the sergeant.
He said witnesses called 911, and officers converged on the location within a couple of minutes, taking Barber into custody without a struggle.
Jesse Maturino was pronounced dead by paramedics, while Miguel Maturino and Necoeche were taken to Corona Regional Medical Center in serious but stable condition, according to police. They are expected to survive.
According to court records, Barber has a misdemeanor conviction from last year for driving under the influence.
